Baltimore, June 18, 2008 – Progressus Therapy’s University Partners Program continues to support students seeking to make a difference as a school-based clinician with its Career Vision Scholarship™. Since 2005, Progressus Therapy has awarded $27,000 in scholarship funds to deserving students.
In addition to the Career Vision Scholarship™, Progressus has announced two new scholarship programs for 2008 in partnership with The Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) and The American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF).
According to Jean Blosser, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, vice president, therapy programs and quality, Progressus Therapy is keenly aware of the impact the critical shortage of school-based SLPs, OTs and PTs is having on children with disabilities. “We have taken action by supporting high performing master’s level students who plan to work in a school setting after their graduation.” Funding can be applied toward educational expenses including tuition, books, clinical materials, and school living expenses.
Progressus Therapy’s Career Vision Scholars help ensure that the needs of these children will continue to be met, says Blosser. “We are committed to investing in tomorrow’s leaders today – when we can make a difference.”
Several Progressus scholars have found their clinical experience rewarding. “One of the greatest rewards a school-based SLP can receive is a child's hug,” said Kimberly Huck, SLP. Debi Scheenstra, an OT, observed, “I have the opportunity to positively influence the lives of children with disabilities, and I have a deep understanding of the impact of disabilities on a child’s ability to interact with friends and participate fully in the classroom.” SLP Christina Rojas explained what she sought to achieve in the program this way: “My goal is to involve parents and teachers in the therapy process to ensure that children with communication disabilities receive help both in the classroom and throughout their day.”
Progressus Career Vision Scholarship™ recipients include:
Ashley Bohanon, SLP, Marquette University
Theresa Bowen, OT, University of Florida
Debra Faithful, SLP, University of Akron
Lindsay Ferguson, OT, University of Illinois at Chicago
